technology views into new areas. We are able to
this through our varied experiences. Each new project provides a wealth of
informative lessons learned to be combined with previous
lessons and then built upon for the next project.
We are currently combining our knowledge in the
healthcare and medical records industry with the
experience of developing secure Web-based
applications for the military. The result is an
application for national medical records
compilation, access, and distribution.
From developing custom software for the healthcare industry we've learned:
- State and Federal requirements for medical records
retention
- Importance of retaining and various methodologies for tracking the chain of custody from physical samples through the distribution of laboratory
results
- Privacy issues associated with distributing, aggregating and providing multi-point, multi-access formats to medical
information
- Importance of classifying information under a hierarchy of security, for example, classifying general information differently from drug-screening
information
From developing custom software for the military we've learned:
- How to authenticate and confirm the integrity of the information distributed via public channels (the Internet, satellite communication) using technologies like SSL (secured socket layer) and PKI (public key
infrastructure)
- How to set up multiple access layers so that access to various levels of information are available only
to authorized viewers
- How to implement these types of systems to a global community of
users
These two seemingly unrelated
areas provide unique lessons for our future development efforts.
