Symbolic on Team Receiving Knowledge Transformation
Initiative Award from Army CIO’s Army Knowledge Awards Program

The C4IEWS Knowledge Consortium team that developed and supports the C4IEWS Knowledge Center, of which Symbolic Systems, Inc. is a key member, received the Knowledge Transformation Initiative Award as part of the Army Knowledge Awards presentation held on August 14, 2003 during the Third Annual US Army Knowledge Symposium held in Valley Forge, PA. The Knowledge Transformation Initiative award recognizes an initiative that incorporates knowledge sharing processes (collaboration, tacit knowledge capture, data mining, etc.) to improve quality availability and speed of knowledge to the decision-maker.

The C4IEWS Knowledge Center is actually an integrated group of knowledge management systems that provide over 12,000 users in PEO C3T, PEO IEW&S and CECOM a web-based portal that allows access to a host of document repositories, up-to-date news and organizational information, collaborative team tools, e-mail, file sharing, directories, internal and external links to knowledge by topic, access to peer groups and subject matter experts, and links to other Army, Government, and other related sites.

Symbolic has been actively involved since the first of the consortium’s Knowledge Centers launched in 1998. Today, Symbolic team members provide project management, design of new integrated Knowledge Centers and software enhancement, content management, and call center/help desk support. To date there are seven knowledge management systems in the C4IEWS family.

The Army Knowledge Awards Program, sponsored by the Army CIO’s headquarters office, provides Army-level recognition for initiatives that provide knowledge-based capabilities for the enterprise – major command level, functional community, or Army level. It highlights those organizations that have achieved tangible successes related to Army Knowledge Management goals.

Knowledge Transformation Initiative was one six award categories. The others were Enterprise Solution, Cross-Functional Solution, e-Army Initiative, Community of Practice, and e-Learning Initiative.

This is the third award that the team has received for its knowledge management systems in the U.S. Army. They received the 2000 Government Technology Leadership Award for its PEO C3T Knowledge Center (one of the C4IEWS Knowledge Centers) and the team’s lead was acknowledged in 2003 with the SearchDomino.com Achiever Award for innovative use of Lotus products in knowledge management.
